At Build to Learn, we believe history should not just be taught, it should be experienced. Our Great Fire of London LEGO workshop brings this historic event to life in a way that books and whiteboards simply cannot. Recently, we delivered one of our most popular KS1 History Workshops at an infant school in Wokingham, Berkshire — and the children’s enthusiasm truly set the topic ‘alight’.
This Year 2 topic is a firm favourite among schools, and it is easy to see why. From discovering where the fire started in Pudding Lane, to quirky facts like Samuel Pepys burying his wine and cheese, the Great Fire of London captures children’s imaginations like no other.

A Hands-On Approach to History
In our workshop, pupils work in pairs to recreate 1666 London before the fire broke out. Using LEGO bricks, they build their own Tudor-style houses, learning about the architecture, materials, and environmental factors that led to the fire spreading so quickly.
Rather than following formal instructions, we provide a step-by-step example with visual guidance tailored to KS1 learners, encouraging problem-solving and creativity. As they build, children naturally engage in teamwork, communication, and perseverance, all while developing key skills in maths and fine motor coordination.

Why Workshops Work for Schools
Many KS1 teachers tell us that while they love teaching this topic, arranging a traditional school trip can be difficult. Between transport costs, logistics, and limited local options, it is not always feasible to take a class off-site. That is why our in-school workshops are such a powerful alternative.
Delivered on-site in classrooms or halls, our workshops offer an immersive, cost-effective experience that not only brings learning to life but also fits seamlessly into the school day.
A Proud Finish
The workshop ends with a collaborative display, as all the children’s builds are placed together on our LEGO River Thames backdrop. Seeing the joy and pride on their faces as they admire their shared achievement is a moment we never tire of witnessing.
If you are a KS1 teacher in Berkshire or the surrounding areas looking for an engaging, curriculum-linked experience for your Year 2 Great Fire of London topic, our workshop could be the perfect fit.
