KS2 Animal Kingdom Workshop
KS2 Animal Kingdom Workshop Overview
This exciting KS2 Science workshop brings the Animal Kingdom to life through hands-on learning and creative LEGO builds. Students will explore how animals are grouped into classifications based on characteristics such as diet, skeleton type, and other key features. Aligned with the KS2 science curriculum, the session promotes scientific thinking, observation, and reasoning skills while engaging students in a playful, creative setting.
Through discussion and building challenges, children will deepen their understanding of vertebrates and invertebrates, the differences between carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores, and how animals are adapted to their habitats. LEGO bricks provide a unique, tangible way to explore these scientific concepts while encouraging collaboration and creativity.
Workshop Learning Objectives
By participating in this KS2 Animal Kingdom workshop, students will:
- Identify and classify animals based on diet (herbivore, carnivore, omnivore) and skeleton type (vertebrate, invertebrate).
- Explore how animals are adapted to their habitats.
- Understand the purpose of classification within biology.
- Develop critical thinking, teamwork, and communication through hands-on problem-solving.
Workshop Learning Outcomes
By the end of the science school workshop students will be able to :
- Group animals into classification categories using observable features.
- Explain how classification helps scientists understand the natural world.
- Describe the habitat needs of specific animals and how their physical traits support survival.
- Build and present a LEGO animal model with justified classification and habitat design.
What to Expect From Our KS2 Animal Kingdom Workshop
This cross-curricular school workshop seamlessly blends Science, Geography and Design & Technology, engaging KS2 students through storytelling, discussion, and hands-on problem-solving. Scientific Exploration: Investigate how animals are grouped and why classification matters in science.
Visual Examples: Identify real-world examples of different animal classes and diets.
Hands-On LEGO Challenge: Build and classify animals based on features like diet and skeleton.
Habitat Construction: Design and build a LEGO habitat that suits the chosen animal’s needs.
Peer Discussion: Share builds and explain scientific reasoning behind classification choices.
Hands-On Workshop Activity Details
During the 75 minute science workshop the students will:
LEGO Challenge 1 – Build an Animal & Classify It:
KS2 Students will choose an animal to recreate using LEGO bricks and identify its classification. They will explain its diet (herbivore, carnivore, omnivore), skeleton type (vertebrate or invertebrate), and other characteristics (e.g., amphibian, mammal, insect).
LEGO Challenge 2 – Design a Matching Habitat:
Using their knowledge of ecosystems and animal adaptations, students will construct a suitable LEGO habitat for their chosen animal, including environmental features that reflect where and how the animal lives.
Why KS2 Students Will Enjoy This Animal Kingdom Workshop
This science workshop taps into children’s natural curiosity about animals while offering a creative outlet through building. Whether fascinated by tigers, turtles, or tarantulas, each student has the opportunity to express their interests and knowledge in a supportive, collaborative environment. It also supports multiple learning styles – visual, kinaesthetic, and verbal – making it accessible and memorable for all.
If that wasn’t enough to excite the students they will have access to thousands of LEGO bricks to bring their animal creations to life.
